Badger’s Millside Farm is operated by Mike and Christie Badger in the suburbs of Hughesville, PA. Our mostly wooded farmette sits on 13 acres along Muncy Creek and is a historic site of a grist mill that operated until the mid 1970s.

We’re not farmers by upbringing or vocations. Christie’s family farming lineage includes dairy farmers, factory hog growers, and smaller homestead type ventures. Mike had multiple summers working on a large vegetable farm in high school in the Mifflinburg area. He also has a stint as dairy barn whitewasher on the resume- a job that sent him to farmers’ barns all across central Pennsylvania.

In the fall of 2007, we purchased our old mill house and moved to Hughesville. All that remains of the mill is the foundation and a dry race. And so our agrarian adventure began. We covered a lot of ground in the direct to consumer pastured poultry business, including pasture raised meat birds, turkeys, mobile processing, and more. These days, our staple offerings have shifted more to ready-to-raise animals (chicks, ready-to-lay pullets, started turkeys, etc).

We sell our pasture-raised eggs in our road side stand on the honor system. We have recently ventured into cut flowers and pumpkins as time allows.

Mike is the Executive Director for the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association (APPPA) and publishes the organization’s bi-monthly magazine. Mike publishes the Pastured Poultry Talk podcast. Mike regularly conducts workshops on a range of pastured poultry topics including production, processing, marketing, and podcasting. He also operates The Bird Nerd, a poultry processing equipment business that originally had it’s start at Badger’s Millside Farm.

Christie is an independent organic farm inspector and consultant. Her consulting work takes her to events and meetings across the United States in support of the National Organic Coalition. She presents regularly on the topics of organic farm inspections, organic farm transitions, and organic advocacy.
