The following WPSU video frames the organic versus local food choice nicely.
Organic is certification that the food was produced according to a set of “standards.” However, the organic standards currently has a lot of loop holes and you might be surprised to know that your organic supermarket chicken never saw the sunshine or stepped outside. Also, organic chicken still travels long distance to get from the centralized processing plants to your supermarket – 1500 miles on average.
Local food, on the other hand, is more than likely produced by someone in your community, which is where your money stays when you buy local. For some consumers, local access to a farmer means they can visit the farm and see exactly how their food is being raised.
There’s nothing wrong with organic, obviously. But it only tells part of the story.
