That’s an easy one, right? Chickens on pasture eat grass and insects. That’s inline with their omnivore tendencies.
But the grass, seeds, and insects that the chickens eat out on pasture is really only a supplement. It provides lots of natural forage and contributes to the exceptional taste and health of the chicken and its eggs. But, it’s a supplement nonetheless.
However, chickens primarily eat grain. Even those USDA certified organic chickens that you buy at the grocer’s market eat grain. It’s ironic, the organic chicken in the supermarket may not even see the light of day, just like their conventional brethren.
Our chickens eat a locally milled grain, and of course, they’re outside on grass. Feel free to ask your farmer what your chickens eat.
