As a consumer, what do you expect from your organic eggs or organic chicken?
Would you feel betrayed to learn that the commercial organic eggs and chicken are raised in large houses with thousands of other birds, much like the conventional chickens?
Would it surprise you to learn that the organic chickens in your grocer’s isle probably never saw the light of day?
Large scale growers raise tens of thousands of birds at a time in a confinement house, in much the same way they raise non-organic chicken. And they exploit loopholes in the organic standard to sell certified chicken while marketing a different view of organic to you, the trusting eater.
So, what’s a eater to do? As you might expect, the solution is to buy from local, small farmers. Visit the farm so you can ask questions and connect with your food supply. And regain some trust in your food.
From the video:
“The gold standard of organic production is pastured poultry producers who either have mobile housing that they rotate through the pasture. These birds are producing eggs that are nutritionally superior. “
In other words, you can get all those health and taste benefits by choosing chickens that were raised according to pastured models (fresh grass and sunshine).
